One can only persevere so long right? I mean who would blame me for jumping ship right? Come on, you know you would do it too right? Think about it for a moment: My commitment as a fan should last only as long as my team is winning, especially in this day of free agency where your favorite player's commitment to the team lasts only as long as things are going just the way he wants. These days there are little or no guarantees that your favorite player will end his career playing for the same team he started out with. Since that's the case, who on earth am I being loyal to?I'm sorry, are you confused? You must have joined this conversation mid-thought as it was playing around in my head. I'm talking about the 'schizophrenic' Denver Broncos. Last night they played the Houston Texans, but brought their 'college' team instead of the guys that beat the Kansas City Chiefs 41 - 7 only five days earlier. In a poetic twist of fate, some good friends of ours had sent us an official welcome pack as New England Patriot's fans (see post titled Fair Weather Fans under the Commitment label), and it just happened to arrive yesterday. In it were 'hoodies', caps and a 'membership certificate' certifying that we are officially Pats fans.
So, should I do it? Should I just go cold-turkey and make the switch? I'm thinking about it, but it's really hard. You see, I'm not a quitter. I've never quit at anything in my life. Don't get me wrong, I've failed at a few things but it wasn't because I quit. I can live with failure, but I can't live with wondering "What if?" Life is like the Denver Broncos (and you thought it was 'lak' a box of 'choclits'). Sometimes everything goes just like you want and other times it really, well... sucks! But it is no reason to quit. So Sola and I (she couldn't really care what team I like since she has no idea about football) decided to show off our support for our new team (just kidding). Russ, I hope you like this picture 'cos it's the only time you're going to see anything like it, so enjoy. By the way, does anyone out there like football? Who's your favorite team?
Sorry Joseph. Not a football fan, but I can relate nevertheless. I switched my hockey loyalty in 2000 from my home team to the New Jersey Devils. Ssshh! (I'm still in the closet). We all want to be associated with a winning team, the team that always wins. I've long since given up my Devils and decided that the only team that always wins is His team. Go team go!
ReplyDeleteAnd that, Hope, is the truth! There is only one team that really matters and one team that guarantees a win everytime. Oh that we could all be a part of that team, especially since there are no tryouts to earn a spot on the team.
ReplyDeleteWell, my friend, I'm glad that at least everything fits! Even if you never take a picture in those get ups again, I hope at least, you'll stay warm in them, since, after all, they are just garments...:-) But it would be a great thing if you switched..Let's face it, being a "patriot" is what founded this great country that we all enjoy living in. I know it's just the name of a team in some respects, but it does have some deeper meaning. Being patriotic isn't just saluting a flag, or following a loyalty in a sport,or a ritual, it's a deeper part of our hearts making a commitment to something that is important not only to us in a physical sense, (liberty and personal freedom) but to our spiritual survival. And hey, it doesn't hurt that the football team is awesome too..!

ReplyDeleteThat's too funny! I guess you can find a spiritual lesson in everything:) Anyway, as you can see from the post title, I'm still a Broncos fan, albeit in futility. Of course, you have bigger problems on your plate when you consider that the Broncos beat the chiefs twice this season, and the last time was a 41 - 7 drubbing at home. Now what spiritual lesson can you extrapolate from that, eh???
